Mexico’s Open Season On Canadians

Over the last few years there has been an obvious (to me) open season on Canadians visiting Mexico. There is no doubt in my mind that Mexicans in positions of trust have decided that they can abuse, steal from and even murder Canadian tourists and get away with it.

This month alone there  have been two reported (and who knows how many unreported) incidences involving Canadians while in Mexico.

Rebecca Rutland, 41, told reporters that she was out on New Year’s Eve with her Fiance’ Richard Coleman in the seaside town of Playa Del Carmen, about 60 kms from Cancun.  The couple was arrested, taken to jail and seperated and then forced to perform oral sex on an officer and then two officers took turns raping her, according to Rutland.  Rutland has asked for a complete and transparent investigation and authorities say that there is an investigation underway by Quintano Roo state authorities. 

Interestingly, the Mexican embassy in Canada released some details on the incident pointing out that Rutland and Coleman were intoxicated and started a fight and attacked each other, hitting a car in the process who’s driver requested police assistance.  But, of course no mention of what the police did to Rutland.

‘Investigation’ – Ya right, just like the investigation of previous murders of Canadian couples and young men that went nowhere.

Meanwhile Mike Dilorenzo, 68, a Penticton, British Columbia man is recovering in a Mexican hospital after being shot in the knee by a straly bullet.

I feel sorry for these Canadians, but what were they thinking going to Mexico in the first place?  Don’t they read the papers or watch the news?  Don’t they realize that Mexico is now controlled by the gangs and drug lords? What about the countless of Canadians that have been killed over the last few years?

If you think it only happens to people that get drunk and go to local bars…think again.  There have been cases of backpackers killed in the mountains.

Why isn’t Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon putting out a warning to Canadians not to travel to Mexico?  Isn’t it Cannon’s responsibility to help protect Canadians?

Use your brains and stay away from Mexico until the government cleans up the violence and the open season on Canadians is shut down!  If you’re stupid enough to go now, maybe you should be shot!
