The Downside of Bicycle and Transit City

During the warm summer months it was easy for Miller to advocate a Bicycle city.  Many Torontonians were pointing out that bicycles aren’t a practical way to run a city.  Miller and his bicyclists supporters were ignoring that feedback.

So what do we have to show for it this year?  Yesterday’s snow storm shows that bicycles are useless in the snow. But, it also shows how bicycles have been abandoned and in the process are blocking designated handi-capped spots.  In fact, this is an example of how bicycles are hurting traffic and accessibility not helping it.

Where have the riders gone?  They’re taking the TTC or hitching rides with car drivers of course.  Where do you think they’re going?  If it weren’t for the drivers during this storm and reaching out to those without cars, many people wouldn’t have been able to get home, at least not without walking in the snow for hours.

Then there is the whole situation with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and its drivers.  Based on 2011 numbers to date, you are more likely to die by being hit by a bus than you are by being hit by a car in Toronto.  If you consider the TTC as a community on its own, it’s driver’s probably have the highest accident rate.

I seriously wonder what is going on with the TTC drivers.  In the past there is a track record of TTC driver’s being rude to passengers, but I don’t recall a time where it seemed that they were launching what could be a gang war on Torontonians.  What I mean by this is that if cab drivers from a certain taxi company were to have these kinds of numbers, the police would be all over them investigating and trying to figure what’s going on.  What are the consequences to the TTC drivers?

In the past we’ve seen TTC employees sleeping on the job, accused of being drunk or on drugs, even texting while driving a bus.  But, I have never seen such a horrible track record whereby pedestrians have been killed in different accidents in such a short period of time.  There have been incidences such as the 1995 subway crash that was brutal (check it out on YouTube) and in which cause was suspisciously not determined.  This year’s numbers seem like a systematic consequence.

The sad thing is that ex-Toronto Mayor Miller had rewarded these drivers with significant pay increases and unionized benefits that are unheard of in private companies.  I find it difficult to take the bus knowing that the bus driver may only have a grade 12 education (if they were even educated in Canada), making more money than me and able at any moment to run over someone on the street that I may know.

Maybe we should privatize the TTC and get rid of the union.

Mexico’s Open Season On Canadians

Over the last few years there has been an obvious (to me) open season on Canadians visiting Mexico. There is no doubt in my mind that Mexicans in positions of trust have decided that they can abuse, steal from and even murder Canadian tourists and get away with it.

This month alone there  have been two reported (and who knows how many unreported) incidences involving Canadians while in Mexico.

Rebecca Rutland, 41, told reporters that she was out on New Year’s Eve with her Fiance’ Richard Coleman in the seaside town of Playa Del Carmen, about 60 kms from Cancun.  The couple was arrested, taken to jail and seperated and then forced to perform oral sex on an officer and then two officers took turns raping her, according to Rutland.  Rutland has asked for a complete and transparent investigation and authorities say that there is an investigation underway by Quintano Roo state authorities.

Interestingly, the Mexican embassy in Canada released some details on the incident pointing out that Rutland and Coleman were intoxicated and started a fight and attacked each other, hitting a car in the process who’s driver requested police assistance.  But, of course no mention of what the police did to Rutland.

‘Investigation’ – Ya right, just like the investigation of previous murders of Canadian couples and young men that went nowhere.

Meanwhile Mike Dilorenzo, 68, a Penticton, British Columbia man is recovering in a Mexican hospital after being shot in the knee by a straly bullet.

I feel sorry for these Canadians, but what were they thinking going to Mexico in the first place?  Don’t they read the papers or watch the news?  Don’t they realize that Mexico is now controlled by the gangs and drug lords? What about the countless of Canadians that have been killed over the last few years?

If you think it only happens to people that get drunk and go to local bars…think again.  There have been cases of backpackers killed in the mountains.

Why isn’t Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon putting out a warning to Canadians not to travel to Mexico?  Isn’t it Cannon’s responsibility to help protect Canadians?

Use your brains and stay away from Mexico until the government cleans up the violence and the open season on Canadians is shut down!  If you’re stupid enough to go now, maybe you should be shot!

Is Nigel Elder A Danger To Torontonians?

You know how once in a while you hear about someone that goes off their rocker and shoots someone.  Sometimes its a disgruntled postal worker and sometimes its a politician like what happened last week in the United States.  Then people stand around scratching their  heads wondering what happened.  Sometimes they say stuff like, ‘he was so quiet I never would have thought’.  Others may say, ‘the signs were there for intervention’.

Take a look at what happened in Toronto on Tuesday for example.  Some character named Nigel Elder ended up in a stand-off with over 50 police officers.  According to the Toronto Star, Elder a 35-year-old from Mississauga visited The Big Slice at Yonge and Gerrard Streets at about 6am.  It was of course closed, so he returned to his family’s Nissan Altima and the car was surrounded by police, guns drawn.

The Star explain that:

1. Elder refused to get out of the car, yet his friend in the car with him immediately surrendered to police.

2. Minutes earlier someone had called 911 saying a man fitting Elder’s description was driving down Yong Street waiving a gun in the air.

3. Elder himself figures he must have been gesturing to radio music.

4. Elder was charged with possession of marijuana and driving without a driver’s licence.

5. Elder tried to bribe police with his $1,ooo watch.

6. They released Elder on bail.

What the *#!@?  This guy is a disaster waiting to happen and innocent people are going to get hurt if not killed.  Why did he refused to get out of his car? Was he stoned…possibly and likely by the sounds of the situation.  Was he being violent by motioning like he had a gun…absolutely!  This is an act of terrorism on innocent, unsuspecting Torontonians that happen to be targeted by this clearly troubled man.  What was he doing in Toronto at 6am anyway?  He was driving without a licence, which means without insurance?  What if he had hit someone with his car?

Why isn’t the system protecting the innocent?  They should keep this guy in jail before he kills someone one.  How many illegal things does he have to do, how many laws does he have to break before we realize he has no intention of living within a community since he acts like an unstoppable predator, fake gun and all? How long will it be before that gun gesture with his hand holds a real gun?

Since law-abiding Torontonians don’t carry guns and therefore can’t readily defend themselves against a gun-carrying predator, it is the police’s responsibility to make sure that citizens are protected from those that break the law.  The police may not have found a gun on Elder, but he had a much more dangerous unregistered weapon – a two thousand pound car.

For goodness sake, throw him in jail and keep him there before it is too late.

Corruption At Queen’s Park?

No…don’t say its so.  How can there be corruption at Queen’s Park, the headquarters of the Ontario government?

On Monday, December 20, 2010 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested three provincial officials and one employe at CB Richard Ellis (a company that provides project management services for the government).  The allegation is based on a cash kickbacks scheme involving government cleaning contracts at the Queen’s Park complex.

Two government officials at the Ministry of Transportation and one government official at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade have been charged with accepting a secret commission and breach of trust and are on paid leave from their jobs.  The CB Richard Ellis employee has been charged with one count of fraud under $5,000 and is on unpaid leave.

The four individuals charged by the OPP are:

Gino Conicella of Woodbridge (age: 47) who is a project co-odinator for the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade; Michaele Depace of Toronto (age: 47) who works for the Ministry of Transportation; Kathy Pagliaroli of Woodbridge (age: 40) who works for the Ministry of Transportation; and Ivanna Presot of Toronto of Toronto (age: 46) who works with CB Richard Ellis Global Corporate Services.

Let me get this straight: 1. Three of McGuinty’s government officials have supposedly taken kickbacks which means that Ontario taxpayers have paid more than they had to for services, 2. They have been investigated and charged by the OPP and McGuinty has send them home to basically do nothing while still getting paid, 3. Ontarians are wondering why their taxes are so high.  Who knows what new tax is in the works at Queen’s park.  It is interesting that the CB Richard Ellis employee is on unpaid leave and the government officials are on paid leave.  Are there different rules for the same acts if you work for the government or if you work for a company?

Oh, and I couldn’t help notice that two of the accused are from Woodbridge Ontario. So I did some research and found out that Sesame Street film “Follow That Bird” has scenes shot near Maxey Park off Willis ave in Woodbridge and that Sean Paul video “Get Busy” was also shot in Woodbridge.

Yup, Follow That Bird and Get Busy…Isn’t it time that we clean up the provincial government?
